Reading has always been my sanctuary. Whether it’s the intricate plots of Chinese literature or the addictive allure of web novels, books have a way of pulling me into worlds where anything is possible. They’ve shaped my perspective, fueled my creativity, and even influenced the way I approach design.
The Stories That Shaped Me
Growing up in Guangdong, my love for stories began with my dad’s well-worn copy of Journey to the West. I’d sneak into his study, flip through the pages, and lose myself in the adventures of Sun Wukong. The Monkey King’s wit and rebellious spirit felt larger than life, and I couldn’t help but imagine myself swinging through the clouds alongside him.
As I grew older, I discovered the world of web novels. The endless scroll of chapters, the cliffhangers that kept me up way past bedtime, the characters who felt like friends—it was addictive in the best way. I’d lose myself in stories of cultivation realms, modern romances, and alternate histories, each one offering a new escape from reality.
Reading as a Creative Spark
As a creative worker, I’ve found that reading fuels my imagination in unexpected ways. The intricate world-building in Chinese fantasy novels, like The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, has inspired me to think bigger and bolder in my designs. The way authors like Mo Yan weave folklore and modernity into their stories has taught me to blend tradition and innovation in my work.
Even web novels, with their fast-paced plots and emotional highs, have influenced my creative process. They remind me that storytelling is about connection—whether it’s through a beautifully crafted sentence or a heart-stopping plot twist.
Three Lessons from My Bookshelf
-
Imagination Has No Limits
—Reading The Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong taught me that even the most fantastical worlds can feel real if the characters and emotions are grounded. It’s a lesson I carry into my designs, striving to create work that feels both imaginative and authentic. -
Resilience is Key
—Many web novels feature protagonists who rise from nothing, facing countless challenges to achieve their goals. Their determination inspires me to push through creative blocks and keep improving my craft. -
Stories Connect Us
—Whether it’s discussing the latest chapter of a web novel with friends or revisiting a classic like Dream of the Red Chamber, I’ve learned that stories have a unique power to bring people together.
What I’m Reading Now
Lately, I’ve been immersed in The Untamed by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The blend of fantasy, mystery, and emotional depth has me hooked, and I can’t help but admire how the author balances intricate plotting with rich character development. I’ve also been revisiting To Live by Yu Hua, a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.
